retarded. (Sorry for the political uncorrectness.) He'll come over to my house and the rugs are out on the deck, obviously I'm cleaning the floors and he'll track all over the entry way with his dirty, snowy boots since the rugs are outside. He's done this at least a couple of times and everytime it really irritates me. He also shows up unannounced all the time. If I don't hear him knock on the door he just comes in. What if my husband and I were in a compromising situation? He has never been good communicator. My whole life he has been emotionally unattached. The only way he ever provided for us was financially. I would have rather had his affection. Do I tell him that his manners are seriously lacking or do I just let it go? How would I politely tell him to be polite and more loving?

The odds of you being able to change your father are somewhere between slim and none.

I do recommend you speak to him openly and honestly, explain how some of his behaviour is not acceptable. Tell him that you don't expect him to change, but that in the future, advance warning of his arrival will give you a chance to set things up so that you can be more accomodating.

Then, lock the door. If he's got a key, change the lock.
Next time he shows up unnaounced, don't answer the door.

I wish I had a father that would visit me, I wish I had a father, period. He is emotionally detached? but he visits you? By all means tell him how you feel. Sounds like he is inconsiderate and rude, I'm not sure how to politely tell him, I would just come out and tell him to call first, maybe you should keep your doors locked so he has to knock. Then when you open the door you can tell him you are cleaning the floor and to take his boots off.

If he has been like that your whole life chances are it wont matter how you say it, or what you say...I say he has no respect and until he does visit him at his house!

Start by locking you door when you don't want any company.
Next, try to say as sweetly as possible, "Dad, I am so glad you are visiting, but next time please wipe your feet."
