They do not even come close to communist now, I don't know about the 70's or before, but now it's an authoritarian system, not a communist one. all you need to see that is one look at their business practices with the US. Cheating their own workers rather then everyone having and equal share and responsibilities- That's pure Capitalism. The US is actually to communism then they are, but we're better on the human rights and most Americans wouldn't choose to live in china for the rest of their lives... I wonder why that is...

Well, did you hear that they are thinking about changing their form of government to that of a capitalist? I ask the same question to myself, and I think they are classified as "Communist" since they still share the believe that workers should take control of factories and business and to share things with people as they needed them. People who used to own the land, factories, and other parts of the economy (what socialists and communists call the "means of production") would not be allowed to own these things any more. Which is what they basically do in China, Their government makes sure that everyone has what they need (called the socialist stage), until everyone understood how to share the right way (called full or true communism). If the country was a monarchy, it would become a republic with everyone having the same rights. Which might happen in China's case, Eventually, once there was true communism, there would be no need for any government since people would share and get along by working together in small groups of workers councils run by volunteers.

The explanation is a very simple one. The brainwashing in the west is vastly superior to anything that has gone before.
I have lived under "Dictatorships" at one time or another. These scare stories about Saddam(Dictator) and other systems like "Communist" is strictly the western storybook definitions.
I think this is to ensure a compliant population who will accept all the rules and taxes heaped on them by their "Democratic" governments". The truth is that most governments whether Communist or Dictatorships do not really have any direct influence on peoples day to day activities and the western headlong rush into Bio metric controls and DNA data bases is more in keeping with the textbook definitions that they use as their boogie man. To be honest, You have never been so controlled and bossed by governments than in the Western world. Most "dictatorships" are in awe of the methods and controls. We will be freer in a place that has a Communist regime like North Korea.
A lot of brainwashed may laugh at that but they are just denying the facts. It is absolutely true. Do you know all content of sites like these are monitored and some material gets removed? It is about time people start to realize that what western governments have done is to superimpose the fictional Dictator and Communist regime with the real ones in peoples minds.

The government has strict controls on the markets, even though they're moving faster towards a capitalist system. It's what economists refer to as a "mixed market". Here in the US, we have a mixed market, but the government exerts far less control. There is no true "free market" as all governments have a hand in the economy to some degree.

Philosophically I think they are still very much in love with the marxist ideal. I believe that right now they are dancing the classic Stalinist 'one step forward, two steps back' dialectic: that is, they are using capitalistic-trending market systems not out of a belief in the free market, but as a tool to establish their own prominence in the world. There is still tight, tight thought control in China--follow how they are still strictly controlling internet access and persecuting Christians [in particular] as well as other religious expression. I think we will see China in the near future much more powerful, economically, politically, and militarily: then it will revert to type, and re-start the drive toward collectivization, exporting revolution, and brutal stifling of dissedents, political, academic, or religious.

It was communist but has begun embracing capitalistic tendencies. It is still heavily state-controlled, however, they are moving towards freer markets.
If you're really curious pick up an issue of The Economist; they almost always have articles on China.

They have slowly been coming to terms with the fact that the U.S., except for our own socialist democrats, have known for years. Communism does not work.
