Hello fellow preggos! I was wondering what your thoughts on episiotomies were? And for those of you that have or have not had one, what was the healing time like in either case? Do you wish you would/wouldn't have had one done? Thanks in advance!

I had one with my daughter, I was sore down there for many many weeks after she was born. With my second, my son, I didn't have one, my doc let me tear naturally and I was only sore for a few days and I need less stitches and it healed more quickly. I wish I hadn't had one with my daughter

i'm 17 weeks preg and been looking up on this as well. from most of the articles i've read episiotomies are still routinely done but now in med school they are taught not to instinctively do them.

so far i've come up with the idea of not having it done. why? episiotomies still have a chance of tearing even deeper with a longer time of healing than what you may have naturally torn. perineal massages and kegel excercises can help as well from my reading.

whatever you decide i'd make it clear to whoever delivers your baby.

http://www.babyzone.com/pregnancy/labor_birth/episiotomy/a1400 has a great article on this. I wouldn't recommend one. I had a nurse stretch me during labor, I only had a few minor tears, didn't hurt at all. My sister had a routine episiotomy both times and she couldn't sit for a long time.

I had bad tearing with my son. The stitches came out within 2 weeks. The area was sore for a few weeks afterwards. The best thing to do is to clean the area with warm water everytime you use the bathroom. The hospital should give you a peri-bottle to take home with you.

I haven't had one personally, but my mother had one with me 23 years ago. I'm sure technology has improved (i've been told it's dramatically different to have a C-section now than it was 20 years ago) but my mother's experience was horrible. She was in pain for weeks and when she moved to CA and had to see a new gynecologist, the doctor was shocked by all the scarring she had down there! I wouldn't recommend it, unless you had no other option.

i had one with my son. i am glad i got one because they say this heals easier than ripping but at the same time it hurt like hell for weeks afterward, i could barely sit or walk and i was so swollen down there. i didn't have sex for nearly 3 months.because it felt like it would rip back open.....lol. good luck.
