Just press on the caps lock key to release it. You probably turned on what are called sticky keys. That happens when you press on a key five times in succession. There is also a good option that most people don't seem to know about. It's called Toggle Keys.

Go to control panel (have it in classic view)....Accessibility Options....Keyboard....third section down is Toggle Keys. Select Use ToggleKeys. Once set, it will give you a beep when you hit caps lock, num lock, or scroll lock.

First of all, what's your OS? If it's Windows, then you may find this helpful, otherwise go look at something else. Depending on your computer's configuration, you may or may not have to skip steps.

WINDOWS XP:

1. Open CONTROL PANEL. (Start>Control Panel).
2. Click or double-click on ACCESSIBILITY OPTIONS.
3. Choose the KEYBOARD tab.
4. Make sure USE STICKYKEYS is unchecked.
NOTE: If it's unchecked already, I don't know what to tell you but look somewhere else.
5. Press OK.
6. Enjoy your non-StickyKeys computer.

P.S. To turn CAPS LOCK off, press the CAPS LOCK key.

Let's say you're frustrated with your work, and start pounding on the shift key (or, as was my case, alternately pounding on both shift keys). If Windows sees the shift key pressed five times in a row it assumes you're asking for a feature called "Sticky Keys". This feature makes the Shift, Alt, Ctrl and Windows keys toggle instead of needing to be held down. Windows does throw up a confirmation dialog, but that's easy to miss if you're still pounding your keys and happen to hit Return.

Disable "Sticky Keys" and you'll be fine.

Pressing the shift key 5 times turns on Stickykeys.

To turn it off, press SHIFT 5 times again, then click the settings button.

By pressing the shift key five times, you enabled the stickykeys. Try pressing it again and click ok to disable.

Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Accessibility Options. The default panel that comes up will, in fact be for the keyboard options. There you can turn off whatever happened to have been turned on. While you're there, for each of the three options, press "Settings", and uncheck "Use shortcut". Now Windows will no longer misinterpret your random keystrokes.
