Hi, I have one too! The thing's whizzing around at 7200 Rpm. I suppose it has some kind of bearings, so though you don't HAVE to, it will prolong the life of your disc to turn it off. The newer models have shock resist, but until recently, they were very shock sensitive, so if the cleaning lady, or your baby brother or even you bonk the thing while it's spinning around at 7200 rpm it can damage it. You lose data- your disc messes up. Smarter to turn it off!

You can leave it running unless you are not going to use it for a few days. Most external hard drives are built so you can leave them running. The have a special seal that allows you to leave it running with out doing any harm. They also go into thier own standby mode.

You can leave it running, it only uses a little juice when not used for a while. It's not going to overheat or anything. Just don't drop it. Mine broke last summer.

It spins down when it's not being used. They're used as backup drives and would probably run for 20 years before they wore out.
