Alaska is not only the closest state, the two are only a couple miles apart. In the Bering straits are the Big and Little Diomede islands. The islands are 2.5 miles apart with Little Diomede in Alaska and Big Diomede in Russia. The international dateline passes between them as well so across the 2.5 miles the date changes, too.

Close in terms of what? Have you read Asimov's "Foundation" series? It very beautifully show how there can be many axes along which "close" can be evaluated.

You could look at it in terms of shipping from a major port to a major port, airflight time from a major airport to a major airport, or walking distance. You could look at it in terms of politics, economics, or numerous other axes.
