I think seriously that New York is the only city that has that kind of dynamic, nothing comes close in the U.S. I think some cities in Asia share a similar quality like Tokyo, but I have heard from some friends that live in Seattle that its a very car-free friendly town.

I lived in Slippery Rock, PA for three years without owning a car. The population is about two thousand...
As long as you live near your work and a grocery store, a car is not necessary.

You are my type of person. Any of the major cities on the Eastern Cooridor, DC, San Franscisco, or Seattle. I am not sure about Portland, but it is pretty earth conscious so I would think it has good transportation.

Portland,Or. has a good commuter train system, or Seattle,Wa has one of the best bus systems in the country.
That depends on how much you go around the city you live,really.

My daughter lives in Bradenton Florida and they have an excellent masstrans (bus) system. They stop every half hour and have bus stops every two blocks.
