Was it diagnosed as a rotator cuff tear? Were MRI's taken? There are many conditions that cause shoulder pain that can present similar symptoms as a rotator cuff tear. Your first option is to be referred to an athletic trainer (not a personal trainer) or physical therapist for rehabilitation. They can provide exercises and treatments that can help alleviate/minimize your pain and help you avoid surgery which is a 8 week to 6 month rehabilitation if it is a rotator cuff tear. By any means, if it hurts enough to write a question here, it is worth while to consult a physician and they will direct you in the right direction. However, qualified (I am a certified athletic trainer) no one can give you effective advice without seeing you and evaluating the extent and condition of the injury.

I tore my rotator cuff 6 years ago in a car accident. I had alot of therapy on it, got cortisone injections, and they even recommended surgery. I opted out of the surgery. Too many people are in more pain AFTER the surgery than they were before. So... yeah, it still hurts sometimes. If I do alot of moving it. Have you tried the injections yet? I would do that first before you decide on surgery. Sometimes they really help. Also, heat and ice. Put an ice pack on it for about ten minutes, then put a hot pack on for ten. Motrin is good too. Helps with inflammation.
