what are some of the ways by which inter-scholastic sports activities could impede academic progress.?

Only a couple of things come to mind as potentially viable..students' attention might not be focused on their studies as they would be without such activities...and one might argue that school money/resources that should be applied to academics (e.g. teaching materials, professors, etc.) are being applied to the sports activities (e.g. fields/courts, uniforms, transportation, insurance, etc.)
