It's a type of flower, mum is short for chrysanthemum. You can use them in corsages. The come in a variety of sizes and shapes and colors. Here is a link that has some pictures:

A mum is a Chrysanthemum, they come in many varieties and either have no real scent or have a strong 'green' unsweet scent, beautiful, especially Fuji Mums which look like starbursts or snowflakes. Not a flower to use for the prom, unless its in a combination with other flowers. There is a tiny variety called a Button mum that can be sweet in arrangements. For a corsage, stick with fragrant flowers, orchids, roses, carnations, lilies, ask your local florist if you want something special, they can recommend some nice alternatives. Hope this helps.

In my school, it's kind of like an over-sized ribbon. It has the cardboard plate at the top, full of decorations and stickers and ribbons etc., with 4 ft ribbons hanging from it..That was the approximate size for the girls, and the guys had mums that were about a foot big...Technically they're chrysanthemums, but I guess they have been greatly altered from their original form..
