the south had a lot of plantations and focused on producing tabacco, cotton, food, and other things of the like. a large part of their economy too was slave labor and trade. it was big business to buy slaves to work in your fields.

the north had a lot of factories and things like that. they focused on producing objects with the raw materials that the south provided (like making clothes out of the cotton). this is one reason why it would have been devastating if the south had won the civil war thereby making themselves seperate from the north. the south did not have the industrial abilities of the north, and the north was far too crowded to allow for enough room to grow crops like the south did.

North - Industry plus CORN.

South - Cotton.

In the end, Europe wanted industry and corn more than they needed King Cotton. And the South wasn't able to produce weapons or machines without the industry of the North.

The North was primarily an industrial region, most manufacturing was done there. Of course, there were also many farms, although they weren't as large as Southern plantations.

Not only was the South primarily agrarian, but most of its arable (fertile) land was given over to the growing of cotton. It traded cotton and cotton cloth for the manufactured goods and food it couldn't or didn't grow itself. This was the purpose of the naval blockade of the Southern ports; to prevent the Confederacy from trading its cotton and textiles for food and war materiel

The North:

Booming industry and trade. Skilled people doing many skilled jobs. Education was sought by most.

The South:

Farm work was the only industry. Because it didn't take alot of skill, farm owners were able to exploit slaves. They were very dependent on slaves to get the most out of their enormous crops. Education was not important. Few schools.
