Yes, must be wireless, and the game must support it.
I play Medal of Honour Heroes on line.
The USB port is for tranferring files, you cannot play on-line with it, nor do most routers have USB ports on them anyway.
Don't forget to turn on the wireless mode on your PSP, the button bottom left must be pushed up.

Well...... you can simply connect to the internet to surf web pages by turning on your PSP and going to network; internet browser; new connection, and then follow the wizard from there.

Assuming you've set up your PSP for a wireless internet connection following the above, all you need to do to play games online is stick the UMD disc into the PSP, start the game, find the games' multiplayer/network play option, and just follow the setup for that game.

And no, you cant connect the PSP to internet via USB cable. You can of course use the USB to transfer media files of all kinds between your PSP and PC, but the PSP has no native ability to use the USB connector for internet. Unless someone has come up with a clever hack/botch of some kind to make the PSP look to the USB for internet connection rather than the wireless circuitry that is not an option unfortunatly. It would also be pointless considering you can buy a Wifi USB dongle for next to nothing.
