Where did you hear that from? You are misinformed. BMWs are very reliable. Maintenance is expensive, but the auto itself is just about bullet-proof.

Best auto on the market for the masses. Hands down.

Maybe because all the bmw lovers don't know where is located the 30-amp fuse protecting the electrical motors of the windows and the centralized closure of the car. YES! They still don't imagine that while trasporting an injured person to the EMS -carefully spread in the back seats- if something goes wrong in these circuits, they will be in SERIOUS troubles (even legal). As soon as arrived to the hospital, no one shall open the back doors, and the windows will be blocked. No way to open the back seats. While the injured one could even die inside the car. What to do? Breaking the window glasses... but how to extract the person? Call for firemen, or for a car service? What if, unfortunately, there will be not enough time to wait for (doors dismounting, or cutting...)?
This is the great BMW safety.
Why? well, this's fantastic... a little, green blown fuse lays UNDER the blocked back seats!
If the BMW lover is lucky, he has no people in the back seats... so he can even perform some (highly confortable) body stretching, diving in the back half from the hand brake lever, and trying to lift the backseat off. Yes, it's almost impossible, since the doors interiors block the extremities of the seat. But it is so nice and confortable!
Also Daimler Benz has this layout for this dangerous fuse.. but there is also an emergency mechanical lever to open the doors ANYWAY! How can be possible even to THINK to put a fuse which protects an opening INSIDE the opening itself!
And what about a car where the substitution of the lights of the rear plate forces you to take off the plate itself (otherwise the lamp carriers don't come out from the chassis...)
Well, anyway... nice car.

They hold the resale value simply because its the ultimate driving machine! And I must say from personal experience of being the original owner of my 20 year old beemer, its been very reliable. I've replaced my american-made cars 3 times since having purchased the BMW.

Not all BMWs are bad in reliability. No maker can be perfect, and every so often, you hear of a "bad" BMW. These BMWs, of course, don't resell quite as high.

Who said BMWs are not reliable?
I am a BMW owner nad have never had the sightest problem. If they are maintained properly they will last far longer than any american built car.
I had an 87 325is with over 300k miles and never used a drop of oil. I was in perfect condition until some idiot hit me.

I can speak from experience as did most of your repsonses. BMW`s are very reliable. I had an 87 325e that had 250k miles on it when I sold it. Its not uncommon to 300k mile BMWs still going strong. If they are so unreliable how come you see so many on the road? Ford probably recalled more cars last year in the US than BMW sold. How many cars can you have 20 years of "YEE HAW" driving every day?

If you (and the previous owner) maintain them properly, they are very reliable and can go for 250k+ miles. I know this from experience. Those who say they aren't reliable have bought one that has been abused (common in a sports sedan/coupe, any make) or have abused it themselves. They just need a little care and maintenance. BTW, the old straight 6's are some of the best engines ever made. Try one, you'll like it.

Supply and demand. Even those who can't really afford to maintain the car will buy it as a status symbol to show off. Believe me, I live in a city where you can find an $80,000 BMW parked in front of a regular apartment complex.

Who says they are not reliable? I drive a 530d, probebly not available in America and have o problems with my car. Also a 320i coup that drives problem free. They DON'T hold their value over here. ie 75,000 for my 530 and if I sold it Today, not 6 years later I'd get around 17k from a dealer.
