the end credits list his role as Howard McNeal. Was he up for the part of McNeal and the credits goofed or was Dud Wash his role from the start?

It must be a goof because he is listed as Dud Wash in these credits (see link below)...

ps - it was Howard MCNEAR that played Floyd Lawson...

It was Howard McNair, and that was Floyd The Barber. No, he was Dud and that was it.

It just lists his name above Howard McNear's name, Howard McNear plays Floyd the Barber. It doesn't list the characters they played.
