Because if they do exist, people would freak out, so it is better to let people think it is a hoax. Also sometimes sightings are not UFOs but are new experimental crafts, that the government are working on. I don't know if I believe in UFOs, but I do believe that there is life out there in the universe besides us. They may have visited us, or they may have not. Who knows? Maybe someday we will.

People that want to believe will accept very substandard evidence as hard evidence.
There have been a few real life experiments, by the Skeptics Society, which demonstrated how little believers and UFO groups police their own supporting evidence.
I once saw something on television, which was purported to be a UFO shown flying with the Rocky Mountains as a backdrop. The show said the craft were estimated at about 50 miles away, and computed speeds and changes in momentum that couldn't be achieved by man. It was a home movie. The motion looked very familiar. Within seconds, I realized that they were filming someones kite, at a much closer range than they thought. The kite was shiny, probably Mylar, and too far to make out, but probably only about half a mile away. Such is not atypical for many UFO researchers. Any evidence supporting is accepted, uncritically, anything detracting is dismissed without inquiry. This doesn't yield much confidence in the conclusions reached.
In truth, what this comes down to is a Grand Conspiracy Theory. The problem with GCTs is that they really stretch the imagination. I've worked in areas which require high clearances. The people that do the work are ordinary people. They keep secrets because they feel there is a compelling reason to do so. Secrets about aliens wouldn't be compelling at all. Why do you think the Executive branch is so rife with 'Leaks'? Because people don't like to keep secrets. The more people with a secret, the higher the chance it gets out. Lots of people (which would be the case if the Govt was covering it up), keeping secrets without a compelling reason to do so??? Not a chance in hell!!!

Anything is possible however most of the UFO sightings have been debunked so many times. If they had gotten one clear pix (they all are fuzzy) it might make a difference. However, my theory is they showed up years ago,met and married the natives of this world and now we have more and more people with allergies from the normal food like milk, peanut butter and even some vegetables.
There hasn't been too many sightings since the invention of the video camera and digital cameras. They are much sharper when taking action shots and well there is nothing to get excited about anymore. Time to move on..
