In a hydrogen fuel cell, hydrogen is combined with oxygen to form water, however, no combustion takes place it all occurs at room temperature, a platinum catalyst being used.

During the combination reaction, the hydrogen gives up electrons which then flow around the circuit, providing an electric current, to the oxygen where they are absorbed.

It is possible to buy toy hydrogen fuel cells. They are first filled with deionised water, an electric current is then passed through the cell to produce hydrogen and oxygen, by electrolysis, these gases collecting in separate reservoirs. When sufficient gas has accumulated, the current is switched off and the fuel cell is connected to a motor, which is then powered by the current produced by the fuel cell. In the toy I have used, the fuel cell and motor are mounted on a toy car which is driven along by the motor. It worked very well but the car only moves fairly slowly.

gas cellular autos will in all probability be out quicker. no might desire to have organic hydrogen in storage. some gas cells can split the hydrogen off of actual attainable hydrocarbons like methane or LPG. on account that gas cells are extra desirable than two times as useful as inner combustion engines human beings will ask your self how we ever have been given alongside with only having a 4 hundred or so mile selection earlier having to refuel.

Well to start the reaction you need a little amount of energy.

We did this experiment before but with a small toy car rather than a real car, we used a tiny solar panel and it was enough to work with about a cupful of water. But obviously for a large sized car you would need alot more energy, also refilling hydrogen is a big problem since it has to be secure etc.

A hydrogen fuel cell burn hydrogen and converts this to water

H (fuel in the form of gas)) + 2O (oxidatdent) -> H2O
