Sorry I can't answer your question, but I will disagree with Chris C. that the entire PAC-10 does not allow names on jerseys. That is incorrect. Some PAC-10 teams do have names on jerseys (Oregon Ducks, for instance).

I played college football at a school that did not put names on jerseys. One reason was the cost of stiching names on jerseys. Our school was able to re-use the jerseys for 2-3 seasons before acquiring a new set, and when you are talking 200 jerseys, it is a significant expense.

Football is probably the most team dependent among American sports. A player's stats are determined as much by the team's offensive/defensive strategy and the quality of his team mates as they are by his own talent. A lot of coaches like to emphasize that by not putting the players' names on jerseys.

I can answer for one school in this situation, Notre Dame. For a few years they had names, but then took them back off. It is because Notre Dame has a long tradition, that was broken, but brought back, of being key on being one. One team. When you put the names on the jersey, you bring on individuality, and take away the "team" mentality.
I'll go ahead and assume that's why other schools chose to do the same.

First off it doesn't have anything to do with confrences, USC is the only team in the Pac-10 that doesn't have name plates. I think it mostly has to do with tradition, but I'm not 100% sure. Either way I like the look, it kinda goes off the basis that if they make enough plays people will know who they are, they wont need the name plates.

In some sports, it's tradition not to put names on the home uniforms because the fans are so rabid and know who the players are (eg. Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees).

Teams that do that on road uniforms in any sports are just plain arrogant; "Yeah, we're great, we expect everyone to know who we are...".

Well...maybe not in world football; many cash-strapped teams put sponsor logos on the back instead of names, as they do in Argentina.

chris c is wrong. some teams in the pac 10, such as AZ, AZ ST, UCLA and OR ST ( i think cal, wash and wash st do as well) , put names on the back of their jerseys...i can only answer as to why USC doesnt. USC doesnt because its been a tradition since the program started. Why other schools dont...i have no idea.

One thing thats even stranger is this...

I was watching Cal/Texas A&M (I forget what bowl it was) and Cal players have their names on their jerseys...all except for their best player Marshawn Lynch! that's right...he was the only one with no name on his jersey...that I found really strange

The coaches know who their players are and apparently are okay with challenging fans to identify players by their number. Prisons use the same approach, taking away the individuals name and replacing it with a number.
