I like the 3D ones, they have things stuck on them to make a picture out of material and bits and bobs.....there was one card i saw with a party dress and hat made of different fabrics it was cool.

If you are a beginner my suggestion is for you to sign up for a card making class at Micheals which will give you the basics you can also find classes at local scrapbooking stores in your area as well. If you want to try it alone then search your area for card kits, these will have everything you will need to make one or two cards at a time with a few embellishments (the 3D art that you like). You can find these kits almost anywhere, dollar stores, Walmart, Scrapbook stores, and the such. When you go into the specialty stores though I suggest asking the people there for some pointers as well as a few basics they may have a basics kit to sell to get you started in the right area, card making and scrapbooking are closely related along with rubber stamping...it really is paper crafting at its best. But as a beginner look for the kits as that is where I started and learned from them how to make better cards and expanded my wings into making my own Christmas Cards this year.

Go through the craft department and look at all the embellishments. They have pens, glitter pens, foamies. They're pieces of foam in different colors. Glue them to create flowers. They also have hearts with peel off backs to stick to your paper.
Get cardstock paper, and a box of envelopes to fit the size card you'll make. They also sell tiny mirrors. You could write Happy Birthday to the world's best friend' and inside glue a mirror.
I almost forgot; I bought a pack of plastic stencils.
They also sell corner punches that punch and/or emboss at the same time.

There are a load of ways to make "cards"! How you would learn to make them has a lot to do with the type you'd like to create.

If you saw some "in a shop," they might be the type where you'd find lots of info in websites dealing with "rubberstamping" techniques (they're not always with stamps btw, but lots of inks, paints, pearly effects, etc.), or with "scrapbooking". Also check out ATC's (artists trading cards) for ideas.
(Just do an online search for any of those, with the word card included)

You can even make cards with pieces of (fairly flat) polymer clay, or even make whole cards with polymer clay (or air-dry clays). If you're interested in any of those, check out this page at my site to see some possibilities:

Pretty much just the same as scrapbooking. Fun papers, glitter, stamps, glue, cutouts, scissors.... everything you need. Then just be creative! The best thing about homemade stuff is you can do whatever comes to mind.

Go to Wal-mart or K-mart and you can find Christmas trees or turkeys to decorate your cards. Look up craft stores to find some good ideas. well I hope that I helped you a little! =]
