try to save work to cd and make changes/additions as they happen like I use to do with floppies. I follow all directions and after I do "write these files to cd" , the wizard opens and does its thing, then I try to open and make any changes I get a the is a "read only file", I have tried checking my work in "properties" before I put it on cd and "read only" is not checked. I am using cd-rw disc, the software is Works 8.5, the OS is XP. I have tried to remove the check mark, click on apply and close but then get a message says I'm not authorized to do that.

You first have to FORMAT your CDRW disc in UDF format; otherwise it's written as a regular CDROM (that is in ISO 9660 mode) and, of course, all its files become read-only! You'll need third party software to do this.
(Nero's InCD does this, or Roxio's Drag to Disc)

Are you using a DLA software to access your CD drive (can you just drag and drop files or do you have to use a burning program to burn the files each time)? I think you can only change that setting if you are using a DLA-type program.
