First you'll want to research Robert E. Lee. Get as much information on him as you can so you have plenty to work with.
Next, you need to figure out your format for the essay. A good essay has about 5 paragraphs: An introduction paragraph, three paragraphs with details, and a conclusion paragraph. If your essay is merely about the life of Robert E. Lee, you should do your essay chronologically. Your introduction paragraph should summarize what you are planning to tell the reader. Each paragraph could be about a different stage of his life.
Plan out your essay. What do you want to put into each paragraph? How will the information be organized? One you have an outline, you can start writing.
As you write, pay attention to your vocabulary. Try to avoid words like "stuff" and "things" and use more advanced words. This is a great website to help find synonyms: http://www.visualthesaurus.com/
Good luck!

You need to make an argument in your essay. Then prove your agrument in the following pages. For example, you could say Robert E. Lee was more concerned about the commonwealth of Virginia, then he was about the rest of the south.
Whether this is true or false, you just made the opening of an argument. Now you are going to have to support your argument from what you had read in class, or from your research. About half way into your essay, you are going to have to state the agrument from the opposing side, proving your argument wrong. Then you show how that side of the argument is illogical. Then you further prove your agrument.
In the end you must write a summary. A summary is just the last paragraph wrapping up each point of your argument and why you are right.

You could always have paid attention when they taught you that. It's really not that difficult. 3-5 pages is nothing. Try this:
Intro paragraph
Body
Body
Conclusion
