I already have a masters degree in MIS and I am starting an MBA. Do you think this is a bit redundant? Some people think so, but others feel that it is a solid, highly visible credential. My career probably will not end up in a technical field... so I think it's worth my time. My question is simply that of classification of the Master of Business Administration - masters or professional. A couple websites put it as professional school, like law or medicine.

The usual meaning of professional degrees = doctorates in fields such as law or medicine. Wikipedia says that professional degrees may be either graduate or undergraduate as long as it leads to a profession.
I do not think the MBA is redundant with the MIS because it is in a different field. An individual with an MBA is usually sought after by business. After getting some experience and provided your MBA is in accounting, you can sit for the CPA examination.

An M.B.A. is a Master's Degree--Master's in Business Administration. Generally a professional degree means a doctorate or specialized training beyond the master's level.
There are a variety of specialities within most MBA programs, with MIS being one of them. Whether earning an MBA at this point would be redundant all depends on what area you specialize in. For example, an MBA in Finance would be related but entirely different, but an MBA in information systems would definitely be redundant.

I would say it depends on how you choose to market it on your resume you can focus on the Masters part of the degree or the professional skill set. If you arent going into the techincal field this would probably add some balance to your educational credentails. It can never hurt to have another degree just make sure you arent making yourself overqualified for the types of jobs you are interested in persuing...check into that first.

I have a piddly AS degree in nursing and it's considered a professional degree. :)
