Never heard of that one. In our house the three kings arrive on Epiphany, (6th Jan or nearest Sunday to it since the Catholic bishops changed the rules last year). By that date, the crib has been packed away for another year so we mark the feast day in church instead. This year the little ones are all dressing up as kings and bringing a present with them for the Catholic Children's Society to distribute.

Poor wise men...They will never make it in UK since all Christmas decorations are supposed to be taken down on the 6th January to ward off bad luck...The continentals must have terrible bad luck since in most households the crib, decorations and tree are revealed to the children on the 24th December and are not put away till the last day in January.
I never heard of peripatetic kings making their way through the house before, but if you fancy taking the figures for a perambulation, start at the most remote spot from the nativity set and bring them closer each day. In our household the first place would be the attic where they are stored, downwards. They would meet great perils on the way such as the cats, the grandchildren, a careless husband, a Buddhist son-in-law, a "Bah!Humbug!" step-father, a clumsy cleaner, a "Must Touch" neighbour's child, a demonstrative dog and quite a few other obstacles scattered here and there, not to mention the steep staircase, and a house busting at the seams to sleep THIRTEEN people.
Not trusting the obstacle course and due to lack of space, I played it safe this year and left them in the attic...There were no protests from Mary and Joseph since they were kept safe there too..I am sure they will be happy to come down to a less crowded household in fifty weeks time.

Dude don't worry, The Bible doesn't even talk about 3 kings but wisemen from the east that brought 3 gifts. It could have been 2 wise men or even 4 or more. Don't worry about religion. More about what's written.

I never heard that it had something to do with direction, although you certainly could. The tradition merely symbolizes the 12 day journey to the Christ child.

Balthazar was one of them. I've never heard of the practice of moving them around the house.
