Long Island is just a long expanded suburb, until you reach about the end of Brookhaven. there are small town centers, like Hauppauge, Melville. There is only one "notable" city on long island, that is downtown Brooklyn.
There are no stereotypical cities, with skyscrapers, etc. There is on;y several buildings that go over 20 floors on the island.

There are 2 answers to this questions. The first being Long Island is a part of New York. It has many cities on it and is just East on NYC. However, there is also a city in Queens named Long Island City.

It's a section of New York, although there is a place called Long Island City in either the Queens or Brooklyn.

I live on long island. Its not a city, its literally and island, to the south east of NY state.

It is a big island containing 4 counties...Kings (Brooklyn) and Queens counties are part of NY City, then Suffolk and Nassau counties have towns and cities within them.
