Ok, I have a '93 sunbird (sunchicken, lol). We just replaced the head and gasket. It is still overheating but strangely. The heat goes up to 3/4...but when we push the gas pedal it tends to drop 1/4 of the value that it is at. So at 3/4 when we push the gas pedal a couple times it goes below 1/2. Also, intermitantley, the heater will just blow cold air, then later it will blow warm air. any ideas?

Sounds like you have a blocked radiator or the thermostat is malfunctioning. Replace your thermostat and check your flow through the radiator.
The easiest way to check your flow is to remove the lower rad. hose and plug it with your hand or other object. Now fill your rad. and leave the cap off. time how long it takes the radiator to completely drain the water.
It should only take 3 to 5 seconds for the rush of water to start trickling. If it takes longer you have a plugged radiator, replace it.

The problem is you are not getting enough air flow through your radiator, Check to see if fins are smashed or blocked with bugs. Another possibility is you cooling fan and or clutch fan is defective. You can simply add a new after market cooling fan, I'm talking about a motorized fan, they cost about 35.00 at the a major auto parts store,. Stuck thermostat are easy to replace and cheap, get the loewst temp. thermostat for that vehicle. Like a 165.

check the radiator or the coolant. Also make sure your thermostat is working properly. I had an old car and it got HOT when it wasn't moving, but at freeway speeds it was fine. This was because at freeway speed the cool air blows into the engine, but when a car is at a stoplight there's no air blowing. Also check if your radiator fan is working properly

Hopefully, when you changed the head and gasket, you changed the thermostat and water pump. That will solve 98% of the problem.

I suggest putting a brick on the gas pedal and sending it off into the sunset

You have either air trapped in the cooling system or a plugging heater core it sounds like.

My car did this recently. Does ur car smoke? If so, heck ur pump the coolant runs throw. Coolant could be leaking out coz it's lose. That's maybe why ur car is doing what it's doing. U would need to tighten it or clamp it down.

It seems like the coolant system is not entirely purged of air.
Keep adding radiator fluid until the system is completely purged of air...
You can not overfill the system.. it will just burp-off into the burp tank.
