I keep my email address hidden but have the option enabled for YA members to contact me through YA. This feature hasn't been abused for me, but I'm sure that it has been for others, especially those who engage in controversial or religious topics. I would disable that feature if it was abused, and that may be the case with those who do not allow messages through YA. For people with whom I enjoy corresponding and who are not long-winded (2-3 so far), I actually transitioned to using my real email address with them, so that they don't have to go through the YA system (which limits message length) for every message.

For those who are really knowledgable, they may have received an overload of correspondence, and their wishes to remove that feature are reasonable. You can get around that limitation by simply viewing their profile to questions which they have answered, note the topics which they seem to prefer, and post your own questions (if they haven't answered a similar question already) in their preferred topics with the hope that they will see it and answer it.

If it is a physics question, feel free to send your question my way and I'll let you know if my strengths fall along those lines.

Why is this question in Physics? In answer to your question, it is likely that the people in question do not have time to chat via email very much and/or also use the email box for business or other uses that make a cluttered inbox a real pain.

I keep mine hidden because spam, and also so entitlement monkeys who don't know what spellcheck is don't pester me.

PS: What does this have to do with physics?
