I also heard that they're going to commemorate a national holiday after him. Is that true?

He was President from 1974 - 1977 after Nixon resigned. He was the first person appointed to the vice presidency under the terms of the 25th Amendment. Ford became the only person to hold the office of president without ever having been elected to the office of either president or Vice president.

Also, during his administration we withdrew from Vietnam.

The only significance is that he was a President of the U.S.

All past Presidents get national recognition on their demease.

No national holiday. Today was just labelled a "National Day of Remembrance" and all federal buildings and federally-operated facilities are closed for the occasion. Including the post office.

There is no mail service today and federal places like court houses are closed. This was done as a day of mourning, I don't know about declaring a permanent national holiday.
Gerald Ford did not contribute much as a president and came by the job by default. He actually raised a lot of controversy because he pardoned Nixon as one of his first official acts.

Don't think there is talk of national holiday - today however is a national day of remembrance. His significance? He became president during a very hard time for this country - and his calm demeanor and quite dignity brought a sense of semblance back to a us. His pardon of Richard Nixon, a very controversial thing, was what set this country on a path to healing and let us move on from what happened.

The death of President Ford will help and helps our country by letting them slow down and remember how it was back then, and remember how wonderful this man was. It may also help President Bush with the war in Iraq. I have no idea if they are making a holiday. But one thing is today (Jan. 2nd) is an official day of mourning.

Ford was a unique president in that he was not elected to office, and he was the oldest past President when he died. I don't know about the holiday thing...

Like his politics or not (and I am a bleeding heart liberal), he was our President (if you are from the US). He was not a fascist even if you thought his politics were questionable. We observed his death today in the US out of respect for a former President.

The significance is that he was an OLD man.

I hope not. We have President's Day, which is supposed to be the day to honor ALL the dead presidents.
