you will have to keep it through the winter, next spring find a good safe place to let it go, contrary to what others here say, painted or RES are native all over the US and as far adapting to the wild?
sit the turtle down near a pond and watch it, instantly they revert.

Please forgive me for being brutally honest: it is better to euthanize the turtle than to release it.

1. It has become moderately resistant to various diseases it got from you and will spread them to an unprepared population.

2. It will not re-integrate to the eco-system and know where to hunt, where to hibernate, where to find a mate, how to escape local predators, etc.

3. Many studies have shown that many species of released animals simply die shortly after release for one reason or another- probably general stress and lack of local knowledge.

If you cannot keep it any more*, try offering it for free with a flyer in the local pet stores.

*- it is not like it is that hard to come up with a bigger habitat, or like it should have come as a surprise to you that it would grow, after all,

Because your turtle has lived in captivity for so long it will not survive long. I raise turtles and I have several that I have adopted from people. The turtles that I have adopted live outd doors in pens built to suet there needs. When it starts getting cold and they should start to hybernate like the rest of the wild turtles they don't. I have to bring them indoors into indoor enclosures. Once you break the hybernation patterns they will not relearn them. Thus they would either starve to death or freeze to death. Many petshops or other turtle owners would gladlly take him in for you. Check www.freecycle.org or www.craigslist.org. Post your turtle there for either free or for adoption. Some one will gladly take him in.

Is this a turtle that you caught in the wild? Because if it is one you bought in a store it is illegal to release it into the wild. Contact your local government enviromental department for more information about your area.

You don't. I would instead say you should try to sell it or give it away.
