I have heard that movie makers MUST make movies where good must always conquer evil at the end of the flick ... This does not necessarily imply that it is a "happy ending" ... but Good Must Win???

Not True. There are a lot of movies where evil wins. Want a pop culture example? Try Empire Strikes Back. Want a well written movie where good doesn't win? Try American Beauty. Heck, even The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. The "Good" is a killing criminal. It doesn't always end well in movies.

This only holds true in American movies. and even then it is not an absolute...there are many examples where "good" does not win. Foreign films from Europe and Asia often have sad endings where bad/evil specifically wins.

America does this because our audiences want to see happy endings or the underdog achieve the lonley kid get picked for the team...etc....

No, that's not true. Look at the movie 1984 starring John Hurt and Richard Burton based on the book by George Orwell. What does the future look like? A boot stomping on a human face over and over again! Although Smith was tortured into finally loving Big Brother right before they shot him in the head and killed him.

Human nature, we want to see happiness, we want to see good triumph over evil --- and part of it is an escape from the pathetic lives we lead, for 1 1/2 hours, we can watch a movie and be where the good things happen to good people, etc.....

See the movie Chopper, bad guy wins.
Or the movie Departed, the hero leaves you hanging at the end, was it really good who won

I think it's not important on who wins in the end. What's important is the lessons learned along the way.

In many of the best movies (as in life) it is not clear what is good and what is evil. So this can't be true

whoever said that never saw movies like videodrome or the classic "easyriders"...easyriders, starring dennis hopper, peter fonda, and jack nicholson, ended with the protagonist s (heroes) being blown apart by rednecks on a deserted highway, and the movie ended with them and their motorcycles and dreams lying in flames as the camera withdrew into the sky

Nope - just about any horror movie ends with a non-happy ending.
