Cd's and DVD's are released on Tuesdays, and new movies normally hit theaters on Fridays, but what day of the week do new books usually hit the shelves?

There is no set date for books. The reason CDs and DVDs come out on Tuesdays is a traditional thing dating back to the 50s. New CDs and DVDs are delivered on Mondays, but no one is allowed to put them on shelves until Tuesdays because in the past, there were some scandals involving unfair distribution practices. Some distributors could be bribed to deliver the new records to certain stores first on Monday mornings, so they would have an unfair advantage in selling the records. At some point everyone agreed to keep the distribution date on Monday, but move the realease dates to Tuesdays to be more fair to the retailers. Tuesday is traditionally the worst day money-making day for stores, so everyone was happy to have something that would drive extra business to their shops. Books haven't had this problem, so they never had to bother, but they often come out on Tuesdays.... they can be released whenever, though. For example, I read somewhere that the new Harry Potter is coming on a Saturday, because the author wants to release on the "magical" date of 7/7/07.

New movies come out on Wednesdays in some cities, but the big releases are usually held to Friday because the movie industry measures their success and decides how much money to spend promoting a film based on how much money it earns the first weekend it's released.

So you probably weren't expecting a history lesson, but I hope that helps answer your question... lol
