im able to sing songs while the song comes on, but i cant remember the lyrics when i try to sing it all by myself. Im afraid i might have a mental condition, i try to remember the songs but i cant, im only able to sing it with them, and im not able to remember most things ive learned like in school. Could this mean i have a memory problem. At times i try to listen carefully to what the teacher is sayiong in school but i seem to be lost in my thoughts or just began to daydream. Is there anything i can do to improve my memory or what?

The problem is recall, not so much memory. You actually "remember" everything but your brain sorts out what is important and what isn't (and is often inaccurate) and stores them away in different places-- think of it like a museum where the interesting things are out on display and everything else is filed away in back rooms. Sometimes things are misfiled, keys to rooms are lost, etc.

Since memory works primarily by association (neurons connecting with other neurons), it's not at all unusual that you can't remember the words to a song without the music. As another example of this, see if you can draw a keyboard on a piece of paper with the each key and its corresponding letter (without putting your fingers on the paper and pretending to type). Bet you can't do it!

So don't worry, you're normal - memories aren't perfect on purpose. People with perfect memories often have various unhappy side-effects.

No, you don't have a mental problem. Memories in the brain circulate and sometimes even push out most memories a person has. The same thing happens to me. Here's a way to remember if you've done something or heard something. Pat your lap four times. Knock on your head.Snap your fingers.Anything you'll remember later. And surely, this will work.

About the song-thing - I don't think that it's unusual. It's like that for me too. I can only sing like 4 or 5 songs without the actual artist singing too. I think that it has got something to do with the melody or something... I don't know. About the school-thing... Can't help you with that, sorry.
