Grace And Grit by Ken Wilber.
Ken WIlber and his wife were one of those great love matches. Within a month of their marriage she was diagnosed with just about the worst form of breast cancer you could have.
The book is the hugely inspiring story of their next five years.
It takes the form of her journal interspersed with his writing. (Ken is a philosopher and also an American Zen Buddhist).
I suppose that the main theme of the book is sad, but it is written so beautifully, tells the truth so well and is so wise that it will do all the things you ask of it.
I do hope you choose this book. If I have to reccommend one book for everyone to read, it is Grace And Grit. It's a real tribute to the power and beauty of the human spirit.
(If you live in England you may have trouble getting hold of it - although Amazon should be able to). If you do, post another Q on here about Grace And Grit and I'll tell you where.)
Best wishes.

Last Chance Saloon by Marian Keyes. Funny, sad, heart warming and could possibly make you cry.
Agree with the others, P.S. I Love You is a great read.
Can you keep a Secret by Sophie Kinsella - not really a sad story but will have you crying with laughter.
