My personal favorites are Lost Cities, Settlers of Catan Card Game, Carcassonne: The Castle, and Kahuna.
Here is a link to a page with some great strategy 2-player games: http://www.funagain.com/control/storelanding/~productCategoryId=STORE_2PLAYER/
You might be able to get better prices and shipping at other online stores, but this store has a 2-player category that makes them easier to find.

I find Balderdash rather amusing. It sounds odd..but some of the definitions people come up with are rather amusing.

he game begins by all players rolling a die, the high roll chosen to be the first "dasher". The dasher draws a "definition card" from the supplied box, and rolls the die to decide which of the five words listed there shall be used (if a six is rolled, the dasher may choose for him- or herself which word to use). Then the dasher writes the definition (as supplied on the card) on a piece of paper. All other players then write down a definition, which may be an honest attempt to supply the correct definition, or, if they do not know or for tactical reasons decide not to, a fictitious definition for the word designed to sound convincing as possible.

The players hand their definitions to the dasher, who checks if any of their definitions are the same as the real definition. If there are any, the player(s) submitting the correct definition is/are immediately awarded three points, and if there is more than one the round is abandoned (though the points are retained). The definitions, including the real definition, are then read out in random order. Players record which answer they believe is correct.

Players are awarded two points if they guess the correct definition. Players are awarded one point for each other player who incorrectly chooses the fake definition they wrote. The dasher is awarded three points if no one guesses the correct definition.

For each point awarded, players move their tokens around the game board one square. The role of dasher then passes to another player. The winner is the individual whose token reaches the end square first.

I read the answers and agree with Stratego and UNO. I would like to add Cribbage as a card game and RISK .If you do not know cribbage it is where you are dealt 4 cards and try to play off each other to make a total of 15 and/or 31 you score points for sequences and other things . The game of risk could take a long time as it not only involves strategy but the luck of the dice as you try to take over the world. If you want more on Cribbbage try a game on line.

Scrabble is a good two-player game - keeps the brain working too. There's also Chess, since you like strategy games. Monopoly can be played with 2 people, but it will take a looooooong time.
As for card games, I don't know any really good 2-player games. I wish I did!
Have fun!

Canasta is a GREAT (my favorite) game to play. It's a card game, and there's a lot of strategy involved. It takes a moderate amount of time to learn, and it may seem a bit confusing at first, but it's actually a very fun game. The only downside is that (for least complicated play), you'll have to buy a special deck of "Canasta" cards.

Another really fun card game is Hearts. There's strategy here as well, and it's quick to learn. It's really fun, plus, you won't have to buy another deck of cards than what you already have.

As for board games, I really like Clue (there's a lot of strategy, and you use it to solve a mystery). Other fun ones are Monopoly, Pictionary, and Cranium. (Cranium's a really spontaneous game that is AWESOME to play with outgoing, fun people, but serious, kind of shy people won't like it or be fun to play with.)

Hope I helped to answer your question!!

:)

The answer is Chess! My wife and I love playing together. If you don't know how to play, the funnest way to learn by far is the Majestic Chess program for your PC. ($10 at Staples.). If you play the "story mode" it trains you in a really neat way. Chess is a beautiful game and is a must for strategy lovers. It's almost puzzle-like. The fun thing is you can set traps for your opponent, or psyche your opponent out when you've made a dumb move and actually smile at the board making them think you've actually laid out a glorious plan. (My wife is good at this!)

When I was around 13, I had to go with my parents to their friend's house and sit around while they played bridge. But their 18 year old son happened to be home that night and he decided he'd teach me to play chess. I was having all kinds of trouble understanding the moves. But he was VERY patient and I finally went home with a pretty good understanding of how to play the game. I am 51 now. And I owe that boy a great debt for bringing chess into my life. I've been very lucky to have found a wife who also enjoys the game. (There's something very sexy about a woman who plays a good game of chess!) I have dearly loved the game all these years and I can't imagine life without it. It has enriched my life greatly. I hope you will learn to play and discover what a wonderful game it really is.

Here are some recommendations for inspiration:

Searching For Bobby Fischer DVD
-This is a great family film, a true story about a very young boy who becomes a grand master. Well acted by Ben Kingsley (Ghandi), Max Pomerak (Fluke), Lawrence Fishburne (The Matrix), Joe Montegna (Baby's Day Out).

Knights Of The South Bronx TV movie maybe on DVD
-Family film, true story about down and out school kids who find value in themselves as they discover chess and form a chess team encouraged by their teacher. They set out to win the nationals!!! But do they win? I ain't one to spoil a movie! You gotta see it! (The girl who played in Akeelah And The Bee), Ted Dansen (who I hate, but was good in this!)

Game Over
-Documentary about Garry Kasparov playing against the Deep Blue computer.

Polgar.com
-Learn about three Hungarian sisters who have become grandmasters even in the men's tournaments. Fascinating stuff with lots of good chess articles and tips on playing the game. Judit Polgar actually broke Bobby Fischer's record by becoming a champion at an earlier age! (Bobby Fischer turned out to be a real snot, so this is a good thing!)

Deluxe Electronic Chess Set (Toys -R- Us $20)
-Excellent inexpensive chess computer will give you some very good challenges. Nice and compact with easy to recognize magnetic board and pieces and instructions on how to play..

I hope this helps! Gee! Can ya tell I get excited about chess???!!!

a card game that i like is "speed" the object is to get rid of your cards
you deal it from left to right like this

-------------------player2
--------------------15-5
-------------------5-1-1-5
---------------------5-15
-------------------player1

the spots you put 1 card into you lay face down until you start the game then you each flip one over. the piles of 15 are each players deck. the piles of 5 that are next to the piles of 15 are each players hand(you can only have 5 cards in your hand) every
time you lay down cards you pick up the same amount that you lay down.
the suite does not matter.

you play the cards on the two piles in the middle such as

-------------------1-6
-----------------5-1-5-5
--------------------2-4

on the 5 above you could play either the 4 or the 6 or you could play another 5. and on the 1 you could play a 1, 2, or Ace

if neither player can play any cards than you flip one card from each side onto the middle piles then play on them like you were just starting

the first one to lay down all their cards and say "speed" wins

I find Othello a good game. If you don't know, It consists of many little circular disks, one side of the disk is black and the other is white. The object is to get all the disks your color. You flip and fill in spaces and can be very strategic.
