"I love you" between friends means that they care for you but "I'm in love with you" means they have feelings above friendship for you.

Usually it means someone just got hosed. 9 times out of 10, this statement is said when a guy gets to know a girl, guy asks girl out, but it's too late and she only views guy as basically a "girlfriend". The guy became too close with no "boyfriend road" paved along the way.
However, this could also be just an innocent statement from someone saying that you rock, and care about you a lot.

there are lots of ways to love someone. just because you love someone does not mean that you are sexually attracted to them. You can love your mom your dad your brother your sister, your friend, your grandma. your wife, your husband, many people confuse sex with love. it is much easy to confuse the 2 when your young. but sex does not make love and love does not require sex. if you love someone it means that they are very important to you and that you would do anything to help them. if your best friend needed a new kidney and you had one that matched would you give your kidney to them? If you would then i would say you loved them if not then you probably don't love them but there still pretty fun to hang out with as long as it does not inconvenience you.

When the words I love you are used peoperly and meant with meaning they stick good, but people abuse the words and they're used for everything having to do with likes.
If you really love someone, you should refrain from using that word so much that makes you Vain when truth is not heard.
