Values are usually morals that are handed down in society by people through families, religion, and or government. I believe that religion exercises a great deal of morals upon people in various ways. To the extent that people follow their religious principles, the society as a whole will mirror those values or morals.
The problem with religious values and morals is that many people want to accept some principles while rejecting others, and some religions accept so-called values which are detrimental to society. If values are allowed to be accepted and rejected at a whim, then they are of little worth and not worthy of practice and acceptance.
Some examples of values are:
* belief in one true God who is the Creator and Supreme ruler over all His creation
* belief that humans of every race were created in His image and likeness for a purpose upon earth
* belief that we will all give account to the Creatore for the life we live on earth.
Some of my personal family values are rooted in my values which are Christian Bible based values. Here are a few:
* I am a husband and father and as such I will give account to God for how I lived with my wife and children.
* I am responsible for how I treat others with love and respect, regardless of how they treat me in return.
* I must live an honest and truthful life in the face of an ever changing world whose values always change.
Values affect society in many ways from the top down. What a leader and/or government will allow and permit will eventually become a way of life or value in society. If a leader promotes and allows dishonesty, lack of integrity, and other such things, a society will begin to take on and believe that those qualities are okay. A lack of value for life, will lead to people believing that it is in some instances okay to do away with life.
Modern values directly relate to how people have decided to live or change their living within the last generation. When people began to believe that freedom of sexuality was okay, rather than monagamy and abstinence, as a direct result, the families of our nation - the United States of American - have been broken apart, new and terrible diseases related only to sexuality have become the norm with little means of treatment, broken marriages and lifestyles and the terrible plague of all of this upon our culture is all too evident in how people live today.
I believe that in this country people should return to believing in Absolute Morality. A great majority of people don't believe in Absolutes. My definition of this would be that an absolute moral is one that cannot change. Such as lying. I don't believe it can ever be right to lie. Murder can never be right. Stealing could never be right. Some would disagree and say that in certain circumstances, any of these would be okay. However, then it becomes no value or moral at all, but simply based on the whim of a person, culture, or government to change. But, if all true absolute morals come from a Creator Who doesn't change, and those morals can never change, then mankind has something to live by which will always stand the test of time, no matter what the culture, government, or one person would try and change. People who would live by a moral code from a Creator would fair much better, treat people better, live better lifes, and enjoy life much better - so that all around would desire to live by those morals.

Very simply, values are what you most want. Typically, a value system consists of a set of values that are internally consistent and support each other. I value honesty, openness, friendship, intimacy, human equality, health, justice, accurate models of reality, effective communication, and happiness. Another person may value rationality, science, objectivity, simplicity, efficiency, stoicism, and so on. For me, the only true values derive from deep within my soul, rather than values suggested by self-serving organizations, traditions, and institutions.

Values are our subjective reactions to the world around us. They guide and mold our options and behavior. Values have three important characteristics. First, values are developed early in life and are very resistant to change. Values develop out of our direct experiences with people who are important to us, particularly our parents. Values rise not out of what people tell us, but as a result how they behave toward us and others. Second, values define what is right and what is wrong. ...
