For the love of Pete PLEASE do not put goldfish in a 1.5 gallon tank, this will hold a 1/2 inch goldfish for a couple of weeks a best. Goldfish should live 20 years and grow to 14", and NEVER believe anyone who says ANY fish will "only grow to the size of the tank" this is total crap.
The only fish that could be housed in that small of a tank without it considered cruel is a betta. And even then its REALLY small.
The most ideal thing is to get a 10 gallon kit with heater and filter, stock it with live plants, planted and floating and set up a beautiful tank with a betta and a school (5 or 6) zebra danios.
It will be a little more money, but it will last longer, the fish will be healthier, it will be easier to take care off. Both the species have an average life span of about 3 years.
Oh yes, please feed your Betta tropical food and remember, colour enhancing only enhances red.

NO NO NO goldfish!!!! Most goldfish grow very large, and I would not reccommend that 1 goldfish be in anything smaller than a 40 + gallon tank. Some people will say, put a betta in there, but that's cruel. Nothing should live in a tank that size, it's just not humane. Yeah, a betta can live in a cup, but only because it is a labirynth fish, and has the abitity to breathe air from the surface of the water, not only through its gills. The ammonia buildup in a tank that size is phenomenal, unless you change the water daily. I suggest you start with at least a 5 gallon for a single male betta, but if you wanted to spend about 30 dollars, you can get a 10 gallon kit from petsmart, and put in some mollies, or guppies, or neons, and a betta, for a little variety. Your child will love it, and you wont have to watch any fish die!!

A goldfish or shubunkin would do. Cold water fish are really cool and will only grow to the size of their enviroment.
So a small fish shouldn't grow too big for the tank. Also Goldfish etc are relatively cheap and so if by any chance your little ones get too eager at feeding or even giving them a drink of milk or juice, it won't break the bank.!

one Beta fish is all you can get, male OR female.
DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT GET A GOLD FISH. Goldfish are messy and poop a lot and your tank will become cloudy in no time. The ammonia from the poop will kill the fish quickly. DO NO GET A GOLDFISH, PLEASE DO NOT GET A GOLDFISH!! I'm pretty sure you don't want to see it floating at the top of the water dead. You could possibly get a 10 cents sized fish but those things grow, you'll have to move it to a new tank soon.
The only fish that you can get is 1 betta fish.

The best option would be goldfish as these do not require heating and are easier to maintain.
But if you want tropical fish i would go for guppies, mollies and platys as these mix well as community fish and are really pretty.
They don't grow very big either.
I'd suggest getting a bigger tank though, it will be rewarding.

The person telling you not to get a goldfish is absolutely right.
I can't believe all these people telling you to get a goldfish!
Goldfish need so much more room than almost any other fish.
A tank as small as yours CANNOT hold even one goldfish.
Get ONE betta. That is all you can get. Don't get two and name the winner! That's just awful.
ONE betta.
I'm telling ya.

A goldfish is a good first fish they can live up to 30 years.
If you get a comet it can live to 14. if you want a more cool fish get a telescopic eye, bubble eye or fantail. but make your
tank water stay with no fish for up to 6 months or the fish may die very quickly. Good luck

If you are looking for tropical fish and only have a 1.5 gallon tank I would suggest neon tetras. They are very tiny but fun to look at. They do best in groups so you may want to get 3 or so. Don't overdue it because it is such a small tank. Best of luck to you!
