What’s the difference between triple antibiotic ointment and just plain old antibiotic ointment?

I fell on my knee and scrapped it with glass that was broken on the floor this past new years and it's dug in deep. my work only has the triple anitibiotic ointment... and i wanted to put some on it but then it made me wonder what the difference was.

O yeah, any ideas on how to keep this sucker from leaving a scar would be great!!!!!!

Different types of antibiotic preparation tend to have a better effect on different kinds of organisms. If you don't know what organism it is invading you, you really don't know how to match the infection to the best anti-bio. BUT when we are dealing with an infection that we know is probably just a low-level, non -life threatening "critter", if you hit it with a "triple-whammy" - designed to cover most of those particular kind of infecting agents, you are more likely than not, going to have it zapped. About the scar? You said that you scraped your knee, not cut it open, and you don't mention having had stitches. But I can't really tell from what you say. triple antibiotic ointment has afew different kinds of ointments in it. it is ok to use. it is better then regular ointment. dont pick at it and it should scar to bad.
