My dial up accelerator has the options accelerate NNTP & FTP ?

They are both protocols used over the internet to transfer types of data.

NNTP - Network News Transfer Protocol
This is used for Usenet, the original message boards from back when the internet was more text based... not used so much anymore. Dynamic BBS on webpages are now far too easy to make, and look better, are more featured, easier to use, etc.

FTP - File Transfer Protocol
The easiest most simple way to host and transfer files. It's still in use a lot. (I'm downloading a new Linux Distro's CD right now over FTP.)

I'm not sure how a dial-up "accelerator" would make these protocols faster. Bandwidth is bandwidth. If you want to download large files, or surf the net comfortably, just get high speed. (Or if you live on a populated area, just get a wireless networking card...)
