I was told by the prosecutor that I need to talk to an attorney because im facing up to 6 months of driving suspension and 250$ for driving without insurance (NJ).

Im not sure what can an attorney can do for me in this case. Well, the car is not mine and I had no idea about the insurance...

I want to talk to an attorney about the case. Would it cost me any money? I want to find out what can they do for me before deciding to hire them.

Most states have free lawyer referral programs. They also have free legal services for low income individuals. You may be able to get free legal advice, but call your state bar for a referral.

Definitely get an attorney who specializes in such cases.
Call your local bar association for referrals if you do not know any. You usually can speak with an attorney on the phone before hiring him/her and feel them out on what can be done for you and what cost will be if you hire them. Don't wait until court date. Do this ASAP.

There should be attorney's in your town/city that give free interviews (to see if you want to use them). They will even look at your case to tell you what it would cost. Just give a few of them a call and ask if they provide a free consultation.

Best of luck.

Some attorneys do offer a free consultation, but most do charge on an hourly basis. You will have to shop around, or call your local bar association.
