I posed a question about Hussein and was given a comment as to whether it was just for him to be put to death. I posted this remark, and would liike your reactions:

About life in prisonment verses death penalty. I had a minor infraction of the law and spent a few months in jail resolving the matter. I met one guy who was still a detriment or even a danger to practically everyone who was in jail there, and he showed no remorse whatsoever for the people he physically hurt (he had a long sentence, and nothing to lose in hurting still more people in jail).

The Old Testament sanctioned the death penalty for people who would have a detremental effect on the rest of the population, either by endangering them or being a bad influence.

Even people with misdomeanor offenses, or low end felonies who are on their way to returning to their lives on the outside deserve protection from creeps like Saddam Hussein - even if he has to be put to death to stop his terror.

Addition: so, for the sake of even prisoners locked up with him, should Saddam Hussein have been put to death, or locked up for life?

Yes, Saddam deserves to die. As Christians we do not rejoice that he will die, we hope that he will repent and realize the truth. If he truly repents and believes in Jesus(speaking from a Christian view point), maybe the Lord in his mercy may make a way out for him or if he dies, he might have a place in heaven. But alas, till he die, he was so defiant and showed no remorse whatsoever.

There is a freedom of choice but there is no freedom of consequences. The international law and the Geneva Convention is against atrocities towards mankind. If caught and proven guilty, the guilty party is put to death. Saddam knew that but he wanted to defy it. He knew the consequences but yet he killed and tortured thousands of people. He had the choice and he thought he would not be caught. He chose and he was caught. Now, he had to face the consequences of his actions.

What happened to Saddam has got nothing to do with us or the world. It was his choice. The law was there before. If he was afraid of the consequences, then why did he tortured thousands?

Therefore we cant blame the governments, the Christians, the Shites or anybody for his death. He chose his own path.

Therefore the moral of the story is that if you are afraid of the consequences, then do not do it.

No. The death penalty brings society down to the level of the evil ones which it is trying rid itself.

December 29: Vatican official says executing Saddam would be wrong: http://www.kwqc.com/Global/story.asp?S=5865506&nav=menu83_2

December 30: Vatican spokesman denounces Saddam's execution as 'tragic': http://www.usatoday.com/news/religion/2006-12-30-vatican-saddam_x.htm?csp=34

Jesus, John 8:1-11, spares a women guilty of adultery whom the Mosaic Law said should be stoned to death.

If the guilty person's identity and responsibility has been fully determined then non-lethal means to defend and protect the people's safety from the aggressor are more in keeping with the common good and the dignity of the human person.

The Church does not exclude recourse to the death penalty, if this is the only possible way of effectively defending human lives.

However in today's modern society, the capability of rendering the offender incapable of doing harm - without definitively taking away from him the possibility of redeeming himself - the cases in which the execution of the offender is an absolute necessity are very rare, if not practically non-existent.

With love in Christ.

I think that I straddle the fence on this one because on the one hand Saddam did very hideous things to his own people and should have been punished for them. On the other hand I saw this broken old man who no longer had any power or posed a threat to anyone. I think like the other butcher milosovic he would eventually have died in prison and I would have been okay with that.

at first I thought they should have waited until the Holy Days were over but then I thought did Saddam EVER give such a break to his victims? I know 2 wrongs don't make a right, but it was the Iraqi doing the execution they could have stopped it or refused, Saddam was akin to Hitler, and if we had had the chance let me ask you in retort ..Should Hitler have been put to death?

Death is too good for a man such as Saddam. He tortured his people and therefore deserves the same respect.

I think that Saddam should have just been locked away -- he was 69 years old! and even if they wanted to put him to death ... i would understand BUT i would NEVER NEVER agree with the way they did it! i felt so horrible for him hearing that he was unable to see his family before he died ... hearing that people were taunting him ... hearing that people were kicking him while he was dieing! .... hearing that people danced around his body !!! this is NOOO WAY FOR ANYONE to die!!! no matter who he is!

Why imprison him for life? He was tried and convicted. Sentenced and the sentence carried out. Now he at least is prevented from causing more mischief in the world. One down --Many more to go.

Yes. The penalty for capital crimes is capital punishment. The court found him guilty, and the sentence was imposed. Where's the controversy?
