I have an acer 5601 that uses an intel piece. i know its already pretty strong but i wanted to get something that would run at 2.5-3ghz. if so could you tell me a model? or would i be better off buying a new one

Of course you can. Make sure which socket size you have. You find that out from Acer. Go to newegg.com, they have a great selection of laptop processors and their prices are preety competitive. And no, laptops dont have embedded processors anymore.

No. Normally the processor is embedded. You would also have to change out the mainboard. Everything in a laptop is normally customized.
