Hi, I suffer with polycystic ovaries which causes erratic periods, no ovulating etc, I got pregnant after being off the pill for 6 months and only having sex a few times! my little boy is now five, I started trying for our second in august and was doing those ovulation tests but they all said I was not ovulating, however I got pregnant after only trying for six wks! Those tests are crap, the best thing to do is have sex as much as poss, dont get out of bed when you have just had sex to allow the sperm to swim! prop your legs up if poss! If you have iregular periods its very hard to know when you ovulate anyway but don't waste your money on those tests! you will need it for all those nappies, baby-gro's etc! good luck

Everyone's cycle is different. There is a myth that woman ovulate 14 days after their period begins...but that is only an AVERAGE and each month can be different. The other thing is that sperm can live inside you for up to 5 days.... so if you are having a shortened cycle one month and you have sex right after your period and you ovulate earlier than day 14 than yes, there is a chance of getting pregnant. The only way to know is to know exactly when you ovulate. There are several ways to know and some are more effective than others. Some can only predict before ovulation happens and some can only predict that is has already happened. The absolute best info I can give you is to go read a book called Taking Charge of your fertility by Toni Weschler. It will help you understand your body and all the myths about it. It will help you time when you are ovulating and the best times to conceive – or not! . It's about knowing your body and knowing when you are fertile or not.
My husband and I tried for 1 year and had no luck..… We tried ovulation predictors , laying with pillows under me for 20 min. everything……the first month that I began using the book I realized that my timing was WRONG!. We got pregnant that very first month and I am now due Feb 2, 2007. You can pick and choose what you do with your info. Good luck and don't listen the all the myths! Even if you don't get into charting and everything....it will help you in so many ways!

If you have an unpredictable periods then obviously it is hard for you to work out your monthly cycle by numbers, therefore you cant calculate when ovulation occurs and have sex around that time. What you can do instead is monitor your body closely for physical changes so you can tell when you are about to ovulate and try to make love with your partner around this time. You can chart your basal body temperature each morning before you get out of bed (for accuracy) and same time each day. Make a note of it as when you ovulate it will either dip then rise or just rise. The next thing you can chart is your vaginal discahrge. As you become fertile it will become slimey like raw egg white this is to help fertalisation etc and after ovulation it will become stickier and thicker. You can also feel for the position of your cervix. You need very clean hands and privacy of the bathroom to do this. Squat down or put one knee on the loo and feel inside yourself. When you not fertile the cerivix is hard and low and will feel to you like touching the tip of your nose. When you are ovulating and fertile it will be harder to reach, higher and softer more squidgy. After a time you will get used to how it feels and the changes.
So to sum up look for these changes in your body and when you notice them make sure your partner & you make love frequently around this time, then you have a high chance to conceive. There is more info on all of this at www.pregnancylounge.com
All the best & Good luck!

Depending on what you mean by "unpredictable", an irregular period is not normal. It could be caused by many things (i.e., diet, stress, etc). Unfortunately, western medicine will tell you it's normal or to go on the pill to regulate it.
However, since you're trying to get pregnant, I would advise looking into "alternative" medicine such as naturopathy or traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). I have heard anecdotally of several women having troubles conceiving/carrying to term and going to see a TCM practitioner and then bearing healthy babies.
If you think about it, isn't it better to confirm that whatever may be causing you to have irregular periods is something that will not affect the health of your baby during your pregnancy? Would you not want to provide the best quality environment to nurture your eggs and your baby?
If so, start asking around and talking to people to find a practitioner. Eventually, you'll come across someone will be able to make a recommendation. Make sure you see someone who is qualified and highly recommended. Through acupuncture and Chinese herbs, they will be able to help regulate your periods and tonify and strengthen your body and organs to prepare for a baby.

Start taking your basal body temperature and chart for a few months to see when and if you're ovulating at all. Your basal temp is taken with a special thermomter at the extact same time each morning before you've gotten out of bed, had a drink or anything.

I bought an ovulation predictor kit, and got pregnant the first month of using it. But saying that my periods were reasonably regular. Perhaps in your case you could try charting your temp in the mornings so you have an indication that you might be ovulating, used in conjunction with the kits, it increases your chances of being intimate at the right time.
Good Luck!

Whenever you notice a lot of creamy, white cervical fluid in your panties, try to conceive everyday that you see this. You are the most fertile when it looks like egg white and is stretchy. I know that is gross, but very true. This will usually last 4-5 days every month. You can get pregnant all these days.

My friend and her husband were trying 3 years for a baby, and she used to talk to me about what the doctors advised her to do, anyway they told her, after sex, sperm usually stays in a woman's body for about 48 hours. They used to have sex at least every 2 days to make sure there was always sperm in her body for when she was fertile! They did go on to have a baby!!!!
