i agree , mexico have many faces, and depend what are you want.

i recomend like san miguel de allende guanajuato, its the most colonial village in the center of mexico, but expensive.

if you have the economic possiblilities , i recommend some beach in the mexican pacific, like puerto vallarta

if you want a colonial city with modern life, you can search information about san luis potosi, zacatecas, guanajuato, very interest citys.

recommend visit

All of Mexico is Mexico so it's just a matter of how large a 'village' you want. The smaller it is the less likely you'll find much info.

If you want a real small town in the middle of nowhere - try this

I ran across it by mistake - but there are many. You might want to consider climate and location seriously (mountains, coast, north, south)

I agree with what muñeca said - Merida is beautiful and the people are the best. But it's a big city so it might not be what you are looking for. But it would be a good place to start your travels and to get a little acclimatized first before heading out to a smaller town.

I´ll recommend my town, Merida. We have lots of tradition as we live in the Mayan area. Locals are friendly and there is a lot to see and learn. Look for it on www.yucatantoday.com
