You need it for warranty work to prove the purchase date.
Also, if you bought it with a credit card, the bank will double the warranty for up to an extra year.

It is a common misconception that a receipt is a proof of purchase....it isn't! If you bought an item and then went outside and gave the receipt to someone else who had the same item...only bought 13 months earlier and was faulty...he then used the receipt....then how is it a proof of purchase!? It isn't! The shop can check back on their records and any extended warranty can be found by the company offering/selling the warranty.
You only need to prove you bought it at the shop in question. That proof can be someones word or a member of staff remembering you!
Shops DO NOT and WILL NOT tell you this because of the problems it will cause them. The only lawful reason for them to ask you to kep the receipt is because it makes it easier for them!
If in doubt.....go to your local library and ask them to find you, 'The Law and YOU' by Hodder and Stoughton. It is clearly detailed in this book and is a handy investment for anyone with problems like this!

Its proof of purchase IE when, where and the price at the time.
For all the shop knows you could be selling them a hard luck story.
I had to take an MP3 player back a couple of years ago about a month or so after it was purchased and was able to get an alternative at the same price as we still had the receipt.

Yeah more then likely they are going to tell you you need to have the computer serviced by the maker of the computer. I can usually never get anything returned or fixed without the receipt. Look high and low you might just find it! good luck!

Try searching for your receipt, they should be able to look it up i guess it depends on the person, who is working at the desk.Did you pay for it with cash, check, visa? Call the store and explain to them what happened, maybe they can give you a copy of your warranty.

I think if you go into the shop and tel them when you purchased it, better if you paid with a credit/debit card they will be able to print out another receipt

With everything being computerized, some stores can look up your purchase based on the credit card you used to purchase the item.
