My dream is to be an actress. How can I get started. Please don't tell me to join the drama club. I am really serious about this. Besides school, what plays can I be in? I live near NYC but where can i get started?

Scroll through the newspaper, internet, anything looking for auditions. Don't forget musicals, if you can sing! First step is to start getting exposure, and the vast majority of the time the best way to do that is to start at the 'bottom'. Don't be afraid of 'extra' roles. Just like any other business hard work is as important as talent - and Directors/theater groups will start to notice that. If you prove that you're willing to work hard and better your talent all the time, this will start to provide leads for possible roles, and maybe even some recommendations.
Also, it probably wouldn't hurt to sit with a Director or two (who is willing to give you some time), and ask them what they look for in an audition. What separates the stars for the supporting roles? How did they get into what they did? Not only will this provide valuable information for you, but it will also reflect positively on you because it shows you are interested and willing to find out what it takes.
Acting is similar to so many other professions - half the time, it's who you know!

I have been in a few shows and it's alot of work. The best way to be an actress is to show confidence, great performance, and get into it. Yes go and audition for shows in NYC or anywhere in your home town. Plus go watch a play, or musical and watch the actors, or actresses performance. Study on how they work, experienced or not. At the end of any play or musical meet the actors or actresses and ask them questions on how they make it so brilliant. They may give alot of great tips. Good luck!
