there is a program called Startup Mechanic, you can get from download.com. It will tell you what is vital for your computer to start and what is suggested and what is not required at all. Its a pretty cool program.

If you want to remove a program from being automatically started during startup,go to RUN and type msconfig and press Enter.
A window appears that has a STARTUP tab, there you will find a full list of programs scheduled to be started up when Windows starts.
If you want to make a program, music file, etc to be started automatically then drag it's shortcut to the Startup folder located in your All Programs in Start menu.
Hope it helps.

The easiest way is to find the startup menu on the start menu (go to start, programs, startup). Delete any icons for programs that you don't want to start up. Run MSCONFIG for advanced control.

I use the program "Chameleon Startup Manager" for it.
http://www.neosoft-tools.com/windows-startup-manager.htm
It disables any startup programs and fully controls startup by selecting the programs to be launched, while customizing the startup settings (ie how often and when programs should be launched, etc).

This software scans your system during startup, displays all processes and applications that are running, provides details of each and gives you the option to either enable or disable the program:
