There are going to be people who both listen to heavy metal and are depressed; this doesn't mean that the depression had anything to do with the music choice or vice versa. There are also going to be people who both listen to hip hop and are depressed. Repeat this phrase, substituting the musical genre of your choice: ska, baroque, cool jazz, Gregorian chant, proto-punk, ....

Well, its certainly true that if you expose a human mind to sufficient amounts of negative emotion, over time, it will have some effect on how they feel; about themselves AND others.
Do you remember the attempted lawsuit against the band Judas Priest? Well, it didn't fly, because, of course, a depressed person could be triggered to commit suicide by any word at all. I once saw a guy go off at the mention of a totally innocent word - but it just so happened to be his "trigger."
Personally, I have a wide taste when it comes to music, but no, I couldn't listen to a constant stream of loud, angry, negative rock.
Some might be able to; I can't. I just like so many OTHER kinds of blues, jazz, etc.

so not true. depressed people listen to emo and grunge. death metal is too fast and hard to be depressing. hard rock on the other hand is manufacured music so theres going to be that sad and softy song in the mix that a depressed person would want to listen to. death metal always gets a bad rap because of these stupid gothic kids that like to cut themselves figure that to fit in thats what they need to be listening to. death metal is more about inticities in the music and crazy cool guitar riffs.

hard rock is NOT death metal. this metal crap of today is SOOOOO different than the heavy metal of the late 70's early 80's. it is not surprising that folks who listen to todays metal would become depressed. or that those who listen to rap would get into drugs and do a drive by.
for me, i think having to listen to michael jackson or backstreet boys or something would be most depressing

i think more or less that you listen to music that fits your mood. I do anyway. Sometimes mellow for my melancholy moods. Or some fast hard stuff for a motivating mood. Same for depressed I will listen to something sad.

i used to love to listen to Type O negative the music was so depressing but since I have been on my own and needing to take care of my own self and have no time for a self pity party, I listen to reggae music it keeps me going, its uplifting to hear people fighting downpressionn (rasta for oppression in english) and I cannot afford to layabout in bed and feel sorry for myself anymore, and now that I am used to moving past my miserable self centered thoughts I feel much better,, oh that... and I stopped taking them damn antidepressants that made me feel suicidal all the time

Depressed people listen to the music because it's something that they can relate to.

I think people listen to music that they can identify with. If your feeling down in the dumps then it makes sense to listen to music that you identify with. This often happens when couples break up and listen to their favorite break up song.
