I had a Mirena fitted a few years ago at the same time as three other friends. Of the four of us only one still has the coil. Everybodies experience is different however I found insertion of the coil outrageously painful - to such a degree that I did not feel well enough to drive home. I was in pain for three months. I kept going to the clinic and asking for it to be removed but each time ended up leaving with it still in place. My partner kept complaining that he could feel it but I was told that this was not possible. After 8 months I developed a strange odour. I went to the clinic and insisted that the coil be removed. When they took it out I asked to see it and discovered that one of the "tails" was like a thick piece of fishing line cut at an angle and very sharp. My partner had been suffering! And the strange odour went in a couple of days. As I said, everyone's experience is different but I think it is useful to know about the downsides.

I had my second mirena coil fitted in October at the doctors. Like my previous one for them to fit it correctly they had to widen the opening of my womb basically they cut it . I won't lie and say it didn't hurt as it did but not as much as child birth does. 5 seconds of discomfort after the cut and 3 hours of mild cramps after the coil was fitted i was back to normal. Personally i think if i decide to have a coil fitted again in 5 years time i shall opt for it to be done whilst i am asleep like when i had my first coil fitted. But all women are different so just choose the best option and birth control that is right for yourself. A bonus with the mirena coil is you only have very slight periods i have saved a fortune in Tampax.

I had it fitted for about a year but found it caused a swollen stomach and looked like i had a football down my trousers! It didnt hurt, they basically cot forceps which clamped onto the neck of the womb and the nurse pulled them down whilst the doctor inserted the coil. Apparently a lot of woman feel faint but the pain is bareable. Its more of a strange feeling. When I had it removed, i thought that would be worse but it was out before I even knew.

I had my mirena coil fitted in november and it hardly hurt at all! When they are inserting it it feels a bit like stomach cramps when you have a period (and lets face it, we are all used to that!) Dont worry relax and you will be fine! All the best Cheryl xxx

I had one fitted at a normal routine womens clinic..My children were in the waiting arera and 3 hours on after the insertion of it i suffered extreme pain ..fainting. sickness.Blood pressure problems and they thought the had punctured it into my womb.It was removed over 3 hours later and after that i recovered. It is rare to have a complication as i was told but it is in fact a foriegn body being placed in your body and for some reason my body rejected it almost immediatly. My complicvation was rare so please dont be put off..I know many who have them fitted and have no problems at all..Dont want to scare you..Just wanted to make you aware that problems can occur.

It doesnt hurt at all. You get a bit of an ache-like a period ache but thats it. Be carefull though, I had one fitted last year and was really ill for months. The doctors said for me to keep with it but I was bleeding so much for months that they had to take it out, my body had rejected it.

No,feel a quick ping as its fitted, and that's it,didn't hurt when removed, but watch for side effects, lumps in legs, and pins and needles in feet were mine, doctor told me there were none.Hospital check up and immediate removal, same day, after having it for 18mths,many people have no effects though so i think its still worth a try, hope it works for you.
