Great question. I'm into art and the local scene here and I enjoy the MFAH exhibit openings (cash bar is cool) and the Art Crawl. Sometimes, if you can catch it in the Houston Press or by word of mouth, you will spot a private tour of an artist's studio. One last idea, before you get bored with my post, walk into any studio and strike up conversation with whomever is working there. Ask them questions about upcoming events and if they have any inside tips on how to get into the local art scene. These people LOVE to talk about what they know and meeting people who are interested in what they are saying is a big bonus to them. So, get out there, be social, and strike up an interesting conversation with someone! The Artiste cafe is really good for open conversation and meeting friendly, artistic people. There is also the Artist Association of Houston on Montrose between Tuam and Westheimer and The Texas Art Supply Store. I've found that people there generally get really excited to talk about their subject. Oh! One last place. Go to the Jung Center for Art (I think that's what it is called) and Google "Art clubs in Houston" to get some event dates. Don't be shy. Good Luck!!!
