They're not staring at anything - they're so old and have lost there eye sight, their vision is completely blurred. Therefore the have to look for a bit longer to try and decifer what it is they're looking at!

My daughters & I have been wondering the same thing. One of my daughters has her hair dyed black with her bangs bright red, I thought that was it. But they stare & don't care if you see them, they don't look away when you stare back. They don't care!

They're thinking. . .
"Am I really this age? Where has my life gone so quickly?"
They're in a stupor. . .at least I will be if I'm blessed enough to reach old age ;)

maybe they are daydreaming or remembering the full life they have or have not lived
