I work with dogs for a living both training and running a boarding business. I am currently training to be an animal behaviourist. In my honest opinion no dog is inherently aggressive. I have had more dog bites and attempted bites from small little lap dogs who stupid idiot owners don't make any attempt to train as they think it's acceptable to not bother training them. Any dog can be trained to be aggressive. Border collies have been my biggest nightmare as they are highly strung yet nobody moans about them as they are perceived to be well natured. Obviously this answer slightly strays from the question but it's a valid point. For example everybody loves a Labrador and assumes they are family dogs yet that poor french lady who had a face transplant was savaged by one !!! So where do you draw the line. The answer is the stupid morons that buy these dogs because it makes them look hard should be put down. I have seen these idiots actively try to make their dog hard because it makes them look good. So in all honesty don't blame the dog blame the owner with one brain cell. The problem with any bull breed however and this includes many dogs that are legal is that if they do kick off they can be very hard to stop. This includes staffies English bull terriers and Bull mastiff. Any of these dogs could kill a small child it's just the unfortunate that this type of dog gravitates towards the morons of the world. So to answer your question if your friends dog is great with kids don't be any more worried than if it was any other breed of dog. All dogs can harm but if it has been well socilaised then it should be as fine as nay other dog. In fact many bull breeds are extremely loyal and affectionate towards humans but can be very antagonistic towards other dogs.

Why did the dog attack? Was it trained to attack? Was it abused? Was the little girl baiting it? These are all legitimate reasons for the dog to attack. We actually had a situation in the town I live in where a couple of kids walked home from kindergarten every day. Every day they would walk by a dog in his yard and throw rocks at him. The owner of course tried to stop it whenever she could, but as she had a full time job, she wasn't always able to be home. Eventually, the dog ended up jumping the fence and attacking one of the kids. Luckily, there were enough witnesses who saw these kids baiting this dog that the dog didn't get put down and the owner wasn't held responsible. Also, if the dog is trained to attack of course he will, it's what he was taught is right. If he was beaten, he probably though he was just protecting himself.

Apparently the local council served a notice on the dog owner as it attacked another dog in the past (surely they must have been aware it was an illegal dog). And a neighbour was attacked. However, the family says the dog was a lovely family pet.
What baffles me is why they chose this dog for a family environment, why not a spaniel? The dog belonged to a young man so I suspect there was some element of looking 'tough' with the dog, to boost his image. Frankly, the grandmother who was injured herself should have refused to take in the little girl as she obviously knew the dog had aggression problems in the past. It's a bit like letting the girl play with a hand grenade and then being surprised when it exploded!

I can't believe they had been warned about the dog's behaviour several times previously, and brought a breed that is bred to be aggressive. I think maybe some people attach too much importance on their animals and humanise them - yes, if a human being attacks another of course they will be given a second chance but a dog? They should have seen the warning times. But i guess it's pointless now to say 'they should'. They're seen the result of their inaction in the most terrible way possible, and it's so sad that it was completely avoidable.

My brother was seeing a girl who literally lived up the road.
The grandparents had left the dog in the back, it wasn't a friendly beast anyway and had never been around children. The little girl had been left on her own unattended in another room. Since the people owned a pub, its the parents to blame. They should never have left their child with anyone who wasn't going to look after them, regardless of whether they were family.
Though it is tragic, it should never have happened

We've all thought the obvious, obviously - pit bull terrier type, dangerous dog, but how devastating and what a life-long punishment for the uncle, certainly no need to state the obvious to him.

The owner of this mentioned dog was warned not so long ago by authorites due to its behaviour ... now the owner has to face his 5 yr old nieces funeral .. It is tragic but i would like to know why on earth did her parents leave her to stay at grandmas knowing the dog has behavioural problems ... so really who is to blame ? I wouldn`t like to be in any of their shoes ...

Owners of dogs that kill or maim humans should be held accountable for the damages financially and criminally. Owners of vicious dogs should pay for the cruelty of their dogs.
